Orthotics are custom made inserts that can be put in most shoes with the goal of helping support the arches of the feet. The arch of the foot acts as the foundation of your body and has to work hard to absorb ground reaction forces. However, over time the arch can begin to fall or the foot can turn often resulting in painful conditions. Orthotics can help to support the arch and allow for better positioning of the foot.

What conditions can orthotics help with?

  • Flat feet
  • Heel spurs
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Lower back pain
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Knee Pain
  • Foot Pain
  • Bunions
  • Shin Splints

How do you get orthotics?

When you come in for an appointment to get orthotics the chiropractor will first ask you about any pain or conditions you are suffering from. The chiropractor will then perform a foot and lower body examination to ensure you are a candidate for orthotics. They will then cast your feet in a foam mold. The mold is then sent to The Orthotic Group for custom fabrication. The process usually takes about 2-3 weeks.

Are orthotics covered by extended health benefits?

Many extended health benefit plans cover orthotics, but they do not allow clinics to direct bill for them. This means that you will have to pay upfront for the orthotics and they submit the claim yourself to the insurance company. We alway encourage patients to call their insurance company prior to their appointment and ask them what is required to have orthotics covered by health benefits. It is often good to ask:

  1. Can I get orthotics through a chiropractor?
  2. Do I require a prescription from my medical doctor? (The date of the prescription will need to be prior to the date of ordering) .
  3. How much does my benefits cover for orthotics?
  4. Is it okay for the orthotics to be casted by a foam mold impression?
